About the album: Tucked away in Haliburton on beautiful Koshlong Lake is the magical Halls Island, a residency that gives artists of many disciplines an opportunity to work on their art in a peaceful and awe-inspiring location.

The Halls Island residency gave me an opportunity to be alone with my thoughts and fears, allowing them to reverberate in ways that they hadn’t had the space to before, which was both terrifying and inspiring. I could really let them breathe, which allowed them to re-surface through lyrics and melodies. The name of this album, and the title track, came to me after my encounter with some of these fears. ‘A Sound in the Dark’ is about a night on Halls Island.

The title track was inspired by a funny but significant story, when I went down to the water, late on a beautiful clear night, to go skinnydipping, and got scared by a sound in the dark and I jumped out of the water and ran back up to the cabin. I was so annoyed that I let that fear take away a really beautiful moment, and I wrote the title track, because I realized how many other moments in my life have been taken by fear. The rest of the album, I realize the more I listen to it, is all about strength. They are all about decisive action, and moving through hard things, and breaking through to the other side. I feel like this is an album of empowerment.

Sandra Bouza has a lot to offer through her music and life experience, and on her LP, Falling Away From Me, the Toronto native shares deeply personal stories derived from living, studying and working all over the world.

Falling Away From Me‘s eight tracks together build on the deep grooves of Bouza’s previous EP, Three Years, showing off her sultry, soulful vocals. But what really shines through on “Almost Love” and other standout tracks, such as “Losing You” and “East Side Woman,” is her ability to lyrically examine relationships from all angles—from the thrill of discovery to the fallout of poor decisions. These are songs rooted in hard-earned lessons, a badge of honour Sandra wears with pride.

She explains, “I thought I had to give up music at one point, but when I reached sobriety in 2015, I got an offer to work in Morocco full-time doing music, and that’s where I did a lot of my healing. It was a gift, and then to be able to come back to Toronto and work on these songs and recordings, that was a gift too.”

But as much as she loved playing other people’s songs in Morocco, Sandra eventually wanted to focus on her own material she’d been amassing since her twenties. That fire was fully stoked during a return trip to Toronto where she met producer Hill Kourkoutis (SATE, Jules) and felt an instant musical connection.

Unlike her initial forays into the studio, Hill made Sandra feel comfortable and has helped her sound evolve from Three Days to Falling Away From Me.

“I really wanted a sparse sound,” she said. “I like space and letting emotion fill it. I kept saying that I wanted everything to be heard, including me.”

Calling her EP Three Years was a nod to Sandra’s time sober at that point, and she was rewarded by winning the 2019 Toronto Blues Society Talent Search. Now with Falling Away From Me, there’s no holding Sandra Bouza back.
